Dorrance Dance returns to the Joyce with a world premiere by Artistic Director, Michelle Dorrance.
A made for Vail tap dance experience, Dorrance Dances: An Evening with Michelle Dorrance and Friends follows the unique journey of this vital American art form in a program created, hosted and headlined by “MacArthur genius“ Michelle Dorrance and a gathering of brilliant tap dancers of today.
Featuring collaborative world premieres and Michelle Dorrance’s own award-winning choreography, some of the best tap dancers on the planet unite from two coasts to bring you this unique evening of infectious music and cutting-edge tap dance.
This program is a collaboration with the LA Phil Insight initiative, generously supported by Linda and David Shaheen.
Tap shoes kick pointe shoes aside in this American version of the holiday classic, The Nutcracker Suite. Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn reimagined Tchaikovsky’s score in 1960, providing today’s preeminent tap company a platform to jazz up the holidays. The colorful fantasy was featured as the nation’s Nutcracker in 2023 with appearances at the Kennedy Center.
Explosive tap dance meets hot jazz rhythms in acclaimed company Dorrance Dance’s intoxicating production of the holiday classic. Danced to Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s marvelously inventive 1960 reinterpretation of the classic Tchaikovsky score, The Nutcracker Suite boogies, slides, struts, and dives through the magical story of a young girl and her fantastical Christmas adventure. Along with collaborators Hannah Heller and Josette Wiggan, Artistic Director Michelle Dorrance transforms the Sugar Plum Fairy into a slinky Sugar Rum Cherry, the “March of the Toy Soldiers” becomes a swinging brass “Peanut Brittle Brigade” romp, and the original ballet’s pageant of national dances gets a fresh new 21st-century twist.
Dorrance Dance will be closing out the Kuopio Dance Festival as part of the Supervisual Gala alongside artists from Finland and beyond.
“Three to One’’ put a tap-shoed Dorrance in between two barefoot dancers, Scott Nicholson and Mishay Petronelli. Stark lighting highlighted feet that skittered, knees swiveling in and out, bodies twisting side to side, casting the contrast between bare feet and hard shoes into sharp relief.”
— Karen Campbell, The Boston Globe
Originally a site-specific work that explored the unique acoustics of New York City’s St. Mark’s Church through the myriad sounds and textures of the feet, SOUNDspace has been adapted and continues to explore what is most beautiful and exceptional about tap dancing — movement as music.
*The creation of SOUNDspace was made possible, in part, by the Danspace Project 2012-2013 Commissioning Initiative, with support from the New York State Council on the Arts. As part of Danspace Project’s Choreographic Center Without Walls, Dorrance received a production residency supported by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
